New Olympic Sport Added This Year

In response to Excelsior, my August 12 post about the Olympics, Steve Malley commented with his typical dry wit, "I'm waiting for pole dancing, BMX biking and dodgeball to be admitted as new sports..." Well, Steve, one-third of your wait is over: BMX is now part of the Olympics, beginning with the Beijing games this year. Who knows, maybe in 2012, the IOC will add pole-dancing and dodgeball, especially since they're removing softball.

Funny thing about folly: there's always someone thinks it's a good idea.

One down, two to go! :-)

I was watching a bit of the olypmics today. I can hardly ever find the events I want to watch because there are SO many others now. I don't really find a lot of them compelling.

STEVE and CHARLES, thanks for commenting. On checking the NBC Olympics site, I discovered the IOC is also getting rid of baseball at the 2012 Olympics. So that leaves 2 open spots, perfect for pole dancing and dodgeball. Maybe we should send them in as suggestions.

I'd also like to see pogo-sticking, although I'm not sure how a pogo-stick contest would be scored. (Whoever can stay on it the longest, or hop the fastest?) It would be funny to watch--for at least 10 minutes, anyway.

What...no bungie jumping???

I imagine 14 separate pogo events: single pogo, team pogo, triple-bounce for height and again for distance, single-bounce the same way, perhaps even a sort of pogo-obstacle course!

Cat herding would make an interesting-to-watch Olympic sport and would require athletes with speed, balance, and agility.

Love all the suggestions. Going to do a post requesting suggestions on alternate Olympic events.
