I've heard that beagles love to roam free and will go to great lengths to escape. When we lived in New Orleans, there was a beagle named Pete on Audubon Street who escaped from his fenced yard frequently. His face was often featured on the lost pet flyers tacked to telephone poles. We rescued him once or twice; other times he got as far as Magazine Street before someone captured him.
