Louisiana Queens

In the midst of writing a new post that is going to be elegant, discursive, and celebratory, I realized I couldn't finish it today--I have to look up further info to make it complete, fact-check, etc., etc.

But I wanted to put up something new on the blog, so here we are: Ta-dahhhh! Louisiana Queens!

I'm thinking Louisiana has more queens than any other state. We have carnival queens, festival queens, and of course, cross-dressing queens. We even have dog queens.

If the legislature ever decides to change the motto on our auto license plates--which has been "Sportman's Paradise" for as long as I can remember--I suggest LOUISIANA--THE QUEENLY STATE.

And, by the way, creds
for giving me the idea to a couple of local blogs I just discovered--NOLA Notes and Pontchartrain Pete. (Their Queens entries are in their archives--here for NOLA Notes and here for Pontchartrain Pete.)

And this is off the subject, but too good not to share: NOLA Notes' "Ode to Galatoire's" (one of the storied New Orleans restaurants).

Closing thought: Being a blogger is like being a stand-up comic--we "borrow" a lot of material.

I suppose that's true about Louisiana, especially with festivals.
It seems like in Texas a lot of our news anchors are former pageant queens of one type or another.

That borrowing is one bit of the interactiveness of this venue.

I don't know about the "Queenly State." There are some strange connotations to that.

Sidney, I held back from saying categorically that Louisiana has the most queens, because Texas probably has more pageant queens than any other state!

Charles, I intended every connotation that can be punned out of "queenly"--however strange!

Stop, Sphinx Ink! You're making me homesick again! There's no royalty out here except for queen palm trees.

Do you think their is a study for what percentage of people in a state have worn a crown? If so, La. would surely be at the top of that one. :)

I agree with Shauna's comment about this blog making me homesick. My daughter came home from school today complaining that there is no place to buy "real" beignets here.

Hmm -- I don't think we have a single allusion to royalty in Colorado. But I've always thought that Louisiana and New Orleans in particular is like nowhere else on the planet, and I mean that in a good way. Every time I've ever visited I sure know exactly where I am, unlike quite a bit of the rest of the country where one town looks just like a thousand others.

Imagine if that time, money & energy was used for improving the lives of people who desperately needed it...
